The Computer Dictionary

How to use

Online Version

Many people are not interested in using the Docbook XML source. They only wish to view the glossary terms in a final format. We call this the "Computer Dictionary." For developers, the Computer Dictionary is a sample application. For everyone else, the Computer Dictionary is an online computer dictionary available in the following formats from these links:

The tabs above and the menu items on the left are just an easy way to navigate and search the 'HTML Chunked' version of the Computer Dictionary directly from this page. So if you want a single place to bookmark, this is it.

Note

The single file formats are large. For faster downloads we suggest using the tab and menu links provided.

Source Version

The primary purpose of this project is to develop a glossary database for use within Docbook XML-based publishing systems. People interested in the source version are generally interested in the glossary database itself.

To help people in getting started and understanding how they may integrate the glossary database with their system, we have provided a sample Docbook XML application in the source.

If you are proficient in use of the "glossary database" and "bibliography database" collection techniques used in Docbook, you will most likely not need any of the application layer examples. You will just want to obtain the bibliography/ and glossary/ directories residing in the trunk/ of the repository. If this is your case, just do a checkout of trunk/bibliography and trunk/glossary directories in the same working directory.

If you are not familiar with the techniques above, we suggest you read the "Sample App" page. This page explains how the sample application was constructed and how it works. Naturally, all this assumes you have some knowledge of XML or Docbook XML. But then you would not be interested in the source if you did not. Right?

If your interest is greater than just than just obtaining the glossary database source and you want to contribute to the project in general, please read the Subversion page. There you will find step-by-step instructions on how to checkout a working copy of all the sources, including those for this Web site.
